With the phenomenal growth of internet users on tablets and smart phones there are some industries that noe get less than half their visitors from desktop computer users.
A typical small to medium sized hotel website for example gets more than 25% of its traffic from devices with tactile screens. So what does this mean for those websites that are trying to convert visits into room reservations?
There are currently 3 kinds of website:
1. Fixed size websites that were designed to run on the internet browsers of desktop computers.
2. Websites as in example 1 but with an additional app that will display a customised version of the site on smart phones.
3. ‘Responsive websites‘ that adapt to display on any device in a user friendly manner.
So what do these 3 kinds of internet presence do for the hotels that run them?
Fixed size websites that were specifically developed to run on desktop computer type devices will not be user friendly when viewed on a tablet such as an iPad or smaller devices such as a smartphone.
Often these sites still run FLASH that will not even show up on IOS devices and site visitors get frustrated quickly trying to navigate the pages of these sites that are just too big and clumsy to push around on a touch screen – not to mention much to heavy in terms of bandwidth use. These websites currently lose a lot of business.
Many websites in an effort to get around the problem explained above also offer a smartphone version of their website. This is often in the form of an app that has been made specifically to run on smartphones.
Unfortunately many hotel websites have been enticed into purchasing the app at additional cost and often the app must be updated as a separate item, which in effect doubles the work involved in updating a website.
Responsive websites offer the perfect solution. They automatically adapt to display on any device. The site won’t just show up – it will actively adapt each page within the site to display attractively and keep the navigation user friendly. So whatever device your clients are using – they will be able to view your website in the way that you want. That is the key to more traffic, more business and with no extra work or costs!
The Responsive web design approach allows you to make a single low investment and run just one website that can scale up and down to all the different display sizes and resolutions available. It means that the same web page can be viewed on a 3.5 inch screen all the way up to a 27 inch desktop monitor – and even super sized flatscreen TVs.
There is simply no other option available for creating a cost effective, user friendly website that works everywhere and is simple to manage and update – especially because you don’t know what new devices are around the corner or what size and resolution they will be.
Think beyond the desktop – think Responsive Web Design!
