Fishing DVDs Case Study
A brand new concept for the Sportfishing World
Being at the forefront of technological innovation seems to come easy to Strike Button Productions. With the phenomenal success of their free online digital video magazine 'Marlin World', now they seem poised to create yet another sensation with 'Fishing DVDs' - a portal that offers immediate digital delivery of Sportfishing DVDs.
The original concept of the website portal was born on the desire to buy fishing DVDs online from the convenience of home, not having to wait for the physical delivery of the product, no matter in which format they were (NTSC or PAL) they could still be played from a disc on any computer, and above all else not having to pay excessive courier or postal costs.
However, as with any new and technologically challenging innovation the concept raised several issues;
1. How to deliver huge file sizes across the internet (most DVDs are about 4.2 GB in size).
2. How to convince the film producers that their work would be safe from copying by 'pirates'.
3. Where would the DVDs be sourced from.
4. How would the DVD digital products be presented to the public on the internet.
Fortunately there was significant interest in the project from an international content delivery network (one of the largest in the world), an innovative Norwegian company that had developed a combined payment platform and DRM (Digital Rights Management) clearing house, the creators of a compression utility developed in a Danish university that are based in Germany.
Having evolved the strategic planning of the project technology, just the matter of DVD content remained. Two leading film producers in the sportfishing film industry did not need convincing when approached with the opportunity to sell their DVDs as digital downloads.
Finally, to inspire customer confidence, an SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Certificate was required enabling secure e-commerce, communications, and client interaction.
Joomla 1.5 is the flexible framework for the project
Invariably, at Navega Bem our design strategy is the wrong way round. We always design a project in Photoshop focusing purely on layout esthetics and what the site visitors first impressions will be - then we look to the available technology to develop the site. But this workflow functions well for us and has helped set us apart from other web design companies.
Having become seasoned Joomla professionals and knowing full well how flexible and forgiving the CMS framework can be - we didn't need long to decide that Joomla really was the software we would craft the web portal around.
Joomla, VMart, and a Digital Rights Management Platform
Once we were committed to using Joomla and Virtuemart it became apparent that the specialized programming we would need to interface between VMart and the DRM platform was not going to be difficult for us - just time consuming and involving exhaustive testing.
Probably the most work intensive area of the project was getting the portal to display and function properly on all browsers across all platforms. The fact that we used a lot of transparency on certain elements of the layout gave us the expected IE6 PC headaches.
In conclusion I want to point out that it was a great pleasure and educational experience to work together with Strike Button Productions on this challenging project and we look forward to many more. See the web site Fishing DVDs here.
